FACTS ABOUT POLLUTION

FACTS ABOUT POLLUTION

1. Pollution is one of the biggest global killers, affecting over 100 million people. That’s comparable to global diseases like malaria and HIV.

2. Cleanups can save animals’ lives and discourage people from littering in the future. Take initiative and host a cleanup -- wearing anything but clothes! -- at a park near you. Sign up for ABC Cleanup.

3. In 1975, the National Academy of Sciences estimated that marine resources, such as cargo ships and cruise ships, dumped 14 billion pounds of waste into the sea.

4. Pollution kills one million hurricanes and 100,000 marine mammals each year.

5. People who live in high-pollution areas have a 20% higher risk of lung cancer than those who live in less-polluted areas.

6. The Mississippi River carries approximately 1.5 million metric tons of nitrogen pollution into the Gulf of Mexico each year, creating a "dead zone" in the Gulf every summer the size of New Jersey.

7. About 40% of lakes in the United States are polluted for fishing, aquatic life or swimming.

8. Americans make up 5% of the world's population. However, the United States uses 25% of the world's resources. It burns 25% of the world's coal, 26% of the world's oil and 27% of the world's natural gas.

9. Each year, 1.2 trillion gallons of wastewater, storm-water and untreated industrial waste are dumped into US water.

10. While 10% of the world's population have children, more than 40% of the global burden of the disease falls on them. Every year, more than 300,000 children under the age of five die from environmental factors.

Interesting Facts About Jupiter Probably you didn't know

Interesting Facts About Jupiter  Probably you didn't know  Jupiter was appropriately named after the king of the gods. It’s massive, has a powerful magnetic field, and more moons that any planet in the Solar System. Though it has been known to astronomers since ancient times, the invention of the telescope and the advent of modern astronomy has taught us so much about this gas giant. 1. Jupiter Is Massive: It’s no secret that Jupiter is the largest planet in the Solar System. But this description really doesn’t do it justice. For one, the mass of Jupiter is 318 times as massive as the Earth. In fact, Jupiter is 2.5 times more massive than all of the other planets in the Solar System combined. But here’s the really interesting thing… If Jupiter got any more massive, it would actually get smaller. Additional mass would actually make the planet more dense, which would cause it to start pulling it in on itself. Astronomers estimate that Jupiter could end up with 4 times its curren...

surprising facts about Bill Gates

surprising facts about Bill Gates Most people know three things about Bill Gates: He is one of the richest men in the world. But despite his philanthropic efforts and  online presence , there are a lot of things about Gates that many are unaware of. Here are 17 facts you probably didn't know about Bill Gates: 1. As a teen at Lakeside Prep School, Gates wrote his first computer program on a General Electric computer. It was a version of tic-tac-toe where you could play against the machine. 2. Once his school discovered Gates' coding abilities, they let him write the school's computer program for scheduling students in classes. Gates slyly altered the code so he was placed in classes with a "disproportionate number of interesting girls." 3. Gates also read the entire "World Book Encyclope...

What is the Bermuda Triangle?

What is the Bermuda Triangle? For decades, the Atlantic Ocean’s fabled Bermuda Triangle has captured the human imagination with unexplained disappearances of ships, planes, and people. Some speculate that unknown and mysterious forces account for the unexplained disappearances, such as extraterrestrials capturing humans for study; the influence of the lost continent of Atlantis; vortices that suck objects into other dimensions; and other whimsical ideas.  Some explanations are more grounded in science, if not in evidence.  These include oceanic flatulence (methane gas erupting from ocean sediments) and disruptions in geomagnetic lines of flux. Environmental considerations could explain many, if not most, of the disappearances.  The majority of Atlantic tropical storms and hurricanes pass through the Bermuda Triangle, and in the days prior to improved weather forecasting, these dangerous storms claimed many ships.  Also, the Gulf Stream can cause rapid,...
